What is Flor de Caña?
by Tyler Tibbs
It won't be long into your Nicaraguan Experience
until you buy a bottle of Flor de Caña to share with
all. I remember being at a beach side restaurant
and a friend asking for a whiskey and the waiter
tells us there is Flor de Caña or Flor de Caña. Sure,
we'll take a media (1/2 liter) bottle we said, I think we
ended up drinking three bottles. Thats right, there's
no telling what will happen when you get to the
bottom of this delicate yet thought provoking
handcrafted rum. Whether its the 2, 4, 8 or 12 year
rum, a bit of ice, limes, and a beach will surely lead you
to bliss. But seriously, there is something truly
Nicaraguan about Flor de Caña.
If you follow railroad tracks to the San Antonio
Sugar Mill in Chichigalpa, Nicaragua you might
discover the roots of what may be the best rum
in the world. It is here, where for over a century
the art of creating rum has been being perfected.
If you can find it, pick up a bottle of Flor de Caña
Centenario, the pinnacle of a century of
handcrafting rum. Slow -aged for 12 years in small
white oak barrels, Centenario is a rich amber-colored
rum with an incredibly smooth taste that is best
enjoyed on the rocks.
So whether you drink or not, enjoy the history of this
traditional Nicaraguan beverage, Flor de Caña.
