Alternative development can encompass a wide
variety of development styles. However, ecotourism generally implies that
the project is outside the mainstream, or strays away from traditional
ideas about tourism development. The phrase ecotourism, while
continuing to grow in popular use, is one type of alternative
development that is often misunderstood and abused. Even firms
who claim to be ecotourism institutions often don't understand
the meaning of the concept.
The International Ecotourism Society defines ecotourism as
"responsible travel to natural areas that conserves the environment
and improves the well-being of local people." In Nicaragua, there are
very few true ecotourism destinations. Quite possibly the best example
of an ecotourism organization in Nicaragua is Morgan's Rock Ecolodge
located north of San Juan del Sur. They have combined a unique
collection of sustainable living concepts with a high-end hotel and
restaurant. I invite you to visit their web site to learn more.
Parque Maderas is striving for many of the same ideals as Morgan's Rock.
While still in the development stage, the grass roots
project has already set many lofty goals for upholding ecotourism
standards.
Organizations like Morgan's Rock and Parque Maderas
will be key in moving development in Nicaragua towards the
sustainable sector. Unlike neighboring Costa Rica, development in
Nicaragua is not regulated nor policed. By setting an example of
what is possible for other developers, big projects like Morgan's Rock
and little projects like Parque Maderas
will be important in every way.
